Tire Maintenance Tips
Checking your tire condition regularly is important to keep your vehicle as safe as possible. A slow leak may not be noticeable until the vehicle alerts you to low tire pressure, and changing it promptly will improve the fuel economy. If there is visible wear and tear on your tires, it is important to change them as soon as possible to keep your vehicle driving safely.
Checking tread depth is easy but necessary in the maintenance of your tires. There are two ways to check your tread depth. The first way is with a coin. Simply take a toonie and insert it into the tire tread. If the tread reaches the bear's paws, you have lots of tread left. If it covers the silver part of the toonie your tires are about half worn down. If the tread only reaches the letters of "CANADA" or "DOLLARS", your tires are worn out and need to be replaced. The second way to check your tires is with a tire tread depth gauge, which is available at most gas stations. Find the shallowest groove of the tire tread and insert the pin of the gauge. It will give you a number between 6/32" and 2/32". If the number is 4/32" or lower, your tires should be changed as soon as possible. At 2/32" your tires are considered bald and a safety hazard.
Check Your Tire Pressure
Keeping the pressure in your tires balanced is key for making sure they wear evenly and to avoid problems like wearing one side of the tire down at a faster rate than the other. Your tires will say directly on the side what their optimal pressure level is.
